Term: space

(spAs') n.

1. empty or available areas or extents in a document, display, text value, storage volume, etc.

2. an invisible character displayed as a horizontal displacement between other characters, used as a separator between words. Also, especially in the EBCDIC character set, blank.

4. to arrange objects so that they extend across an area or so that there is sufficient distance between them.

Term: special character

n.

a character that is displayed as a visible character form other than a letter, digit, or underscore. Special characters used in SAS statements include these:

" # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > @ { | }

In SAS, the underscore (_) is treated the same as a letter and is not a special character.

Term: special missing value

n.

any of 27 distinct missing values in SAS numeric data. A special missing value is written in a SAS program as a period followed by a letter or underscore. Formats write a special missing value as the letter, in uppercase, or underscore.
