to convert to packed decimal.

any of various means of representing numeric data in which four bits are used for each decimal digit.

Term: pad

(pad') v.t.

to extend text to a certain length by adding spaces, zeroes, etc., to the beginning or end. Character values are padded with trailing spaces when they are assigned to variables whose length is longer than the length of the value. With the PAD option, input records that are shorter than the logical record length are padded with trailing spaces.
